spiral harmonies

"Ammonite" 2011
Herb Spiral Garden at 2 weeks old
Spiral fractals fill my vision, swirling and growing, endlessly self-reciprocating in all planes with calm resonance.

Above are two spiral arrangements I have personally constructed. The first, a print made by combination of two techniques- stone lithography and monotype-depicts an ammonite fossil. Ammonites are extinct today, but their chambered shells are preserved in stone through geological magic.

The second image, a garden constructed in my backyard, is based on a similar spiral as the form. The size of the spiral is about 12-15 feet across, and the soil slopes upward as it spirals inward, forming a mound. At regular intervals are various perennial herb plants, a design feature further mimicking the spaced chambers of the ammonite spiral. The plants are arranged around the mound such that heat-loving herbs inhabit the south-facing slope, while shade-tolerant species occupy the northern side, and the diversity of species together create various microclimates and habitats around the garden.

The spiral garden is part of a larger permaculture project undertaken by some friends and I, and an essential part of permaculture is recognizing the superiority of non-human design principles and motifs, which abound and replicate themselves in nature, and also applying them to human creations. Bio-mimicry, another term for this idea, is a wise philosophy. Part of my exploration with geometric shapes is a study in the sacred patterns of nature, which appears in each living creature, and harmonize diverse and seemingly chaotic trajectories into unity.

There are many ways to manifest sacred geometric practices and ideas into your everyday existence, and your experience will always be the richer for it.

Tectonic Murmers

This piece is another new one, completed most recently. The design is a pinwheel of right triangles melting into shadows... present yet fading from this world, we see only the ghostly afterimage. Or are we living in an inverse reality, wherein the geometry is emerging from shadow, waxing into brilliant radiance?

For this too shall come to pass, when ancient darkness recovers the night from modern glorious usurpation. Many voices shall silence, yet too many eyes open to morning sunlight.

Everything is quiet and empty,
All the incense has been swallowed up
    by the endless night

"Nine" (2011)
This print is one of the newest, completed a couple weeks ago. The composition is derived by dividing a circle into nine, and constructing equilateral triangles based on the division.
The sacred number nine has a complex, powerful resonation which is also sublimely beautiful. The square of three, the number nine contains within it layers of triplication which magnify allied forces within the sphere.

At night, deep in the mountains,
I sit in meditation.

Study in Singularities

"Shimmering Radiance" (2011)
this piece is a first experiment printing with aluminum etching technique, completed a few months ago. Composed of black ink on silver spraypaint on black tar paper, it depicts a single point of existence within infinite cosmic space, a congruence of energy lines.
Singularity is Multiplicity.   The universe as we apprehend it can be interpreted as the sacred interaction of many separate, distinct pieces; or it can be seen as a single unit which contains within itself the divinity of complexity and diversity.
Both interpretations are correct when they acknowledge and celebrate each others truth.
Embrace the cosmic aum.

Emergence!!

"Torus" (2011)

heres the first, a linoleum cut print of a holy torus, created by encircling points on a single center circle.  The collection of the encircled points create an emergent sunflower-esque pattern, and focus their edges to form more concentric circles.
Gaze upon the circles within circles, meditate on the circles within your own life.
